2.7.1. Check of brakes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Besides periodic check of a brake it is necessary to examine at each removal of a wheel or at suspicion for their abnormal work. Any of the listed below indications can testify to possible malfunction of brakes:

  – when pressing a brake pedal the car takes away aside;
  – squeal or a scratch when braking;
  – the brake way exceeds norm;
  – feeling of pushes of a pedal;
  – dribble of brake fluid (emergence of smudges on an internal surface of the tire).

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Brake shoes of disk brakes are supplied with the built-in indicator plates. At reduction of thickness of slips to a limit plate publish squeal or a scratch. If when braking such sound is distributed, it is necessary to replace immediately blocks, otherwise the expensive brake disk will fail.
2. Release nuts of forward wheels.
3. Lift forward part of the car and establish on supports.
4. Remove forward wheels.

Disk brakes

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. On each wheel support of a brake there are two slips – internal and external. Overlays of forward brakes are visible through an observation port in a support. Having put a steel ruler to a window, it is possible to measure residual thickness.
2. Check thickness of each of slips, having examined them from above and from below a support and through an observation port in a support. If thickness of slips is less than norm, replace slips.

Prevention

Keep in mind that thickness of slips does not include thickness of a steel substrate of a block to which slips fasten rivets or glue.

3. If it is not possible to determine the residual thickness of material of slips through an observation port or if you are interested in the general condition of blocks, remove a support and blocks for further survey (see subsection 9.3 and subsection 9.4).
4. After removal of blocks wash out them a cleaner of brake system and measure thickness of slips by a short steel ruler or a caliper.
5. Measure thickness of a brake disk, be convinced that the disk is still suitable for further operation. If thickness of any disk is less maximum permissible (see subsection 9.1), replace a disk (see subsection 9.7). Check a condition of a disk irrespective of its residual thickness. At detection of zadir, deep development and traces of a strong warming up remove a disk and a proshlifuyta (see subsection 9.7).
6. Before installation of a wheel check a condition of all hoses and pipelines of a brake contour, existence on them of cracks, corrosion, dribbles of liquid, twistings or excesses, especially in places of fastening of rubber hoses on brake cylinders of a support. Be convinced that hoses and tubes are on sufficient removal from sharp edges, moving details and exhaust pipes. If hoses and tubes settle down too close from the specified details, unbend brake tubes or replace them, and also check and if necessary replace details of connections (see subsection 9.11).

Back drum brakes

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. For check of thickness of brake overlays of back brakes there is no need to remove brake drums. Get rubber caps from a brake board, and having lit a small lamp, check thickness of slips. For more careful check of a condition of overlays of back brakes arrive as follows.
2. Remove brake drums (cm. subsection 9.8).
3. Check thickness of brake overlays of back blocks, check existence of traces of pollution by brake fluid or greasing. If the slip is pasted, thickness from a block surface to a slip, as shown in drawing if the overlay of a priklepan to a block, the defining size is distance from slips to heads of rivets is measured.
4. If thickness of glued slips is less than 1,5 mm (or distance from slips to heads of rivets) of less than 1,5 mm, replace slips. Slips should be replaced also at detection of cracks, a glossy surface, or at pollution with brake fluid or greasing. Procedure of replacement is described in subsection 9.8
5. Check a condition of the top and lower springs of blocks and correctness of their installation. At detection of extension or deformation of a spring replace, otherwise blocks will be taken away insufficiently from drums and quickly to wear out.
6. Check existence of traces of dribbles of brake fluid on wheel cylinders for what carefully hook and take away an external sealant of the cylinder. If under a sealant traces of brake fluid are found, replace the cylinder (see subsection 9.9).
7. Check existence on brake drums of deep development, cracks, furrows and the painted sites. If defects cannot be removed with an emery paper, drums should be removed and pierced in a workshop of car service (in more detail procedure of repair is described in subsection 9.8).
8. Install brake drums (see subsection 9.8).
9. Establish wheels and wrap nuts.
10. Clean supports and lower the car.
11. Tighten nuts of wheels with the moment specified in subsection 9.1.

Check of the vacuum amplifier of brakes

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Take the wheel and execute the following actions.
2. Stop the engine and press a brake pedal several times. Thus the course of a pedal of a brake should not change.
3. Press a pedal of a brake and start the engine – the pedal of a brake has to considerably "leave forward".
4. Press a pedal and stop the engine. Hold a pedal within 30 seconds – the pedal should not neither utaplivatsya, nor be released.
5. Again start the engine and 2 min. later stop. Then again press a brake pedal several times, – the course of a pedal has to decrease after each pressing.
6. If the behavior of brakes differs from described above, the vacuum amplifier or needs under repair, or replacement. The order of removal of the vacuum amplifier is described in subsection 9.13.

Emergency brake

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Slowly lift the lever of the emergency brake against the stop and count number of clicks. If the number of clicks meets standard, the emergency brake is adjusted correctly. Otherwise the emergency brake it is necessary to adjust (cm subsection 9.14).
2. The emergency brake can also be checked having installed the car on a steep slope, having put it on the emergency brake and having transferred a check point control lever to neutral situation. If the car starts moving a setup, the emergency brake it is necessary to adjust (cm subsection 9.14).
